Fashion School Urges Skills Acquisition

Popular fashion centre in the heart of Lagos, De-image Creation and Fashion Institute is set for its fourth graduation ceremony with no fewer than 40 students swelling the fashion and creativity industry.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Mrs. Temilola Akintayo, the graduation event which holds on 14th October at 7Star Event Centre in Ogba, Lagos, would further lift the fashion business as a result of the value the new graduands would add to the sector.

She noted that the decision to embark on a free training exercise for the empowered students became necessary as a result of the surging unemployment figures and moral decadence in the society.

While she agreed that formal education was a right step for nation-building and development, complementing such effort with vocational training might not be a bad idea especially now that unemployment has hit an all-time high in the country.

“The reality on the ground is that not all graduates can be gainfully employed. This is why government needs to invest heavily in skills acquisition to relieve itself of the burden of unemployment and also generate more revenue to execute meaningful and developmental projects.”

She said the trainees had acquired relevant skills ranging from trendy western and traditional designs, material mixing and others from which they can earn a living for the rest of their lives while also passing on acquired knowledge to younger generations.

She also reiterated the commitment of the school to produce professionals who are capable of competing favourably with local and foreign counterparts in the industry. As a way of encouraging the graduands, Akintayo added that the institute would also support students by providing free sewing machines and other fashion instruments. The essence of this was to enable graduands start work immediately after graduation as some may be forced to relax at home for a lack of start-up capital.

The multiple award-winning seamstress thus called on privileged individuals, corporate organisations and the government to support the cause so as to expand the effect of the gesture.

Some dignitaries expected at the classy occasion include: the Ooni of Ife, former Head of State, Ernest Shonekan, Chief Alex Duduyemi, representatives of Lagos State Government and other eminent personalities.
