Enugu Restates Commitment to Staff Training, Capacity Building

The Enugu State government has expressed its continued determination to invest resources on the training and re-training of its workforce to improve their efficiency.

Declaring open a five-day capacity building training workshop in Enugu recently, the Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Princess Peace Nnaji, stressed that government’s emphasis on staff development was to bring the best out of them.

“Some of you who are attending this workshop must pay attention to the resource persons so that you will not remain the same after the training, we have engaged the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Prof. Peter Ebigbo, who is currently the National President of the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) to lead other top resource persons to conduct the training for you.”

She explained that the aim of the training was not only to infuse into social workers the highest professional and ethical standards but also to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques for adoption and fostering in the state.

The Director, Child Development, Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mr. Romanus Eze, commended the state government for employing new social workers and for organising the workshop, adding that such periodic re-training of staff would boost capacity and improve their general performance.

In his remarks, the Anglican Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, expressed satisfaction with the response of the participants, adding that with the massive turn-out of workers at the workshop, government would be encouraged to make the training a regular feature.

He urged people of the state to support the reform agenda of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Earlier, the training Coordinator and National President of ANPPCAN, Prof. Peter Ebigbo, said the training took the format of a retreat in order to properly drill the participants on the rudiments of government work, ethics, legal frame work, (Child’s Right Law) social work, mediation as well as fostering and adoption.
