- Martins Ifijeh

As part of efforts to ensure healthy life among Nigerians in the workplace, the National President, Society of Occupation Health Physicians of Nigeria (SOEPHON), Okon Akiba, has called on workers to get trainings on occupational safety.

Stating this during SOEPHON’s Annual Convention in Lagos recently, Akiba said workers have the right to know the potential hazards and risks associated with their work and workplace. According to him, ‘’SOEHPHON is desirous to work with the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), and the Guild of Medical Doctors to ensure the technical empowerment of doctors in private practice with basic occupational health knowledge and skills in order to ensure that most workers that encounter them outside the workplace or designated workplace clinics are evaluated for possible occupational impact on their health.’’

On his part the key note speaker and Country Representative, International Labour Organisation, Dennis Zulu stated that safety at work should be adapted by using available tools like research, government legislation, training and education to improve occupational health.

Zulu further added that young people doing jobs not fit for them could be exposing themselves to danger, adding that certain jobs be given to professional to handle .
