Against the backdrop of next Saturday governorship elections in neighbouring Anambra State, the Delta State Police Command yesterday said movement would be restricted around the Niger bridge popularly known as Onitsha bridge with effect from midnight of Friday.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, said in a statement that the decision was to prevent any security breach around bridge linking Asaba, Delta State to Onitsha, Anambra State.

With this development, travellers from the South-western part of the country would have a hectic time linking all the South-eastern states through the only connecting bridge to the Igbo land.

According to the statement, “The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Zanna M. Ibrahim, has ordered the restriction of vehicular movements through the Niger bridge with effect from 12 mid-night on November 17, 2017, till after the elections.

“The CP notes that only those on official and emergency duties with genuine means of identification will be allowed passage during the period of the restriction order.”

While regretting the inconvenience the restriction will cause commuters, especially those traveling to the South-east and South-south states, the police boss enjoined travellers to take alternative routes or make do with other contingency plans, noting that the restriction order was in the overall interest of public wellbeing and safety.
