3e Actuaries Open: Markus Aiming to Match Odoh’s E/Guinea Standard

- From Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja

Elisha Markus has reckoned that he will draw inspiration from the dominant profile of Nigeria at next month’s 3e Actuaries Equatorial Guinea Open Championship in Mongomo. Nigeria’s Oche Odoh won two of the four editions of the tournament after compatriot, Gift Willy wrote his name on the maiden edition in Malabo in 2013. Markus is one of the seven Nigerian professional golfers that will compete for a slice of the $150,000 prize money in Africa’s biggest professional tournament from December 14-17 in the Wele-Nzas Region. In an exclusive chat with THISDAY last night, he said his target is to match the impressive profile of Odoh in Equatorial Guinea. “It is a fact that we have a good record in Equatorial Guinea through the doggedness of Odoh and Willy. Though this a high profile and demanding international tournament, we have to keep the record straight by showing what Nigerian golfers are capable of doing,” Markus said. Markus qualified for the tournament for the first time by earning one of the three qualifying slots at the Ibadan Mesiogo Open last month. He said that he is undeterred by his limited international exposure, saying that he has asked those familiar with the terrain about what the 3e Actuaries Open is all about. “I have made the necessary enquiries about the tournament from those that have graced the stage and the response is about the beauty of the golf course, the excellent organisation and the amazing atmosphere in Mongomo. I am glad to be part of that group,” he said.
