Pathcare Partners SYNLAB to Increase Capacity in Diagnostic Tests

- Ugo Aliogo

As part of measures to increase capacity in laboratory diagnostic tests in Nigeria, SYNLAB, a leading provider of medical diagnostic services in Europe, has acquired majority stake in Pathcare Nigeria Limited, the largest private pathology laboratory group in Nigeria

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos to announce the partnership, the Chairman of Pathcare, Dr. Richard Ajayi, said the issue of having accurate diagnostics test has been the problem which many hospitals in Nigeria have been contending with.

He also stated that from a survey carried out by the firm, it was revealed that hospitals were having challenges especially in the area of accurate diagnostics, adding that Pathcare is committed in these challenges.

He further stated that as a group, the firm has grown, and in 2016, when it did the survey, it was discovered that it (Pathcare) had the largest market share in Nigeria. “We have large record for having accurate results”, he stressed.

He explained that over the years, it became quite clear that there was need for the group to do lot of the tests in the country, since they were running 20-25 percent of their tests results in South Africa.

The transaction with SYNLAB allows Pathcare Nigeria the ability to offer its customers an extended portfolio of specialised tests being sourced from the SYNLAB network. The company will benefit from the technological advancement and comprehensive cost-effective solutions to enhance the local business with hospitals and other customers. It also provides customers with greater access to benchmark medical diagnostics.

“The turnaround time was long and people had to wait. We decided that there was a need to increase our capacity in Nigeria in terms of the amount of tests that we run. This is what has led to this relationship to SYNLAB. They are the largest group in Europe and the partnership is an opportunity to provide a lot more tests to Nigeria and this is a transformational event for healthcare operation,” he noted.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer, SYNLAB, Thomas Degott, said that through this partnership his company is committed to bringing innovative tests to Nigeria, besides experience and expertise.

He also stated that SYNLAB found a laboratory which shares its values, stressing that “we are committed to leadership and Pathcare is committed to the values of quality leadership.”
