- Martins Ifijeh

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has advised the newly appointed Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) and Medical Directors (MDs) to strive to create a harmonious working relationship among the management and staff of their various institutions with a view of achieving maximum performance in the hospitals.

The minister gave the advice in Abuja, earlier in the week while presenting Appointment letters to the newly appointed CMDs and MDs whose appointments were recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adewole urged the new appointees to seek support and necessary information from the outgoing CMDs and MDs to enable them start off on a good note.

He encouraged them to report challenges that required urgent attention to the Health Minister or the Permanent Secretary, in the Ministry.

“Imbibe the culture of clinical audit. It is very important because it would allow you to know the number of patients you have treated over a period of time and it would also give you opportunity to know who did what among the staff in the hospital.”

Adewole called on the Chief Executives to provide leadership at all levels of activities in the hospitals and manage all internal challenges that might occur in the course of their duties. He also commended the outgoing CMDs and MDs for providing selfless service in their various hospitals before the new appointments.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Osarenoma Clement Uwaifo, called on the new Chief Executives to ensure peaceful co-existence within their various domains and their immediate environs.

He said: “It is only when there is peace that the hospitals can function. If a peaceful working atmosphere is established at various hospitals, it would be a booster for the Federal Ministry of Health to also perform its functions.

Uwaifo urged them to work with all Health Unions and Associations to avoid rancour and disharmony in the system.

He also advised them to be just and fair to all staff adding that injustice could create problems redulting in unpleasant situation in hospitals.“There must be discipline but you must be fair and just in all your activities. Avoid tribal or religious sentiment,” the Permanent Secretary cautioned.
