Niger Police to Impound Vehicles with Concealed Number Plates

The police in Niger State have said they will soon start impounding vehicles with concealed plate numbers, adding that the drivers of such vehicles will be arrested and prosecuted.

The police in a statement said the illegal concealment of vehicle number plate had been traced to increasing cases of kidnapping and other criminal acts in the state.

The statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammad Abubakar, added that “the police command will not hesitate to arrest any person or group of persons seen to be driving vehicles with concealed number plate and whoever is arrested will be charged to court in accordance with the provisions of the Road Traffic Act.”

He expressed dismay that members of the public, including top government officials, drove their vehicles with covered number plate in the state.

Abubakar said the command had directed all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to enforce the provisions of the Act.

In a related development, the state police command has warned those it described as “undesirable element causing confusion at the Obasanjo shopping complex to desist from the act or would be arrested and prosecuted.

Abubakar said the activities of some of these youths along the major road had contributed to the gridlock on the road.

He said several motorists had complained that their vehicles were either burgled or their cell phones snatched by these people parading themselves as cell phone repairers.
