What US Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, Said About Trump’s Comment on Nigeria
ollowing the concern shown by the Nigerian government over an insensitive remark reportedly made by the US President, Mr. Donald Trump, about Nigeria, the US ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, has stood up for his boss and given clarification on the controversial discourse.
Symington simply affirmed that the administration of Donald Trump has a high regard for Nigerians, and values the excellent cooperation between the two countries. He added that there were contradicting statements on the substance of the controversial statements.
Mr. Trump may have raised much dust in the international community with his usually strong comments since assumption of office. His latest remark is however attracting far more global outrage than imagined.
In a meeting with congressional leaders in his office, Trump allegedly described immigrants from Haiti, Nigeria and other African countries as people from “shithole countries”.
In reaction, the Nigerian government described the remark, if true, as hurtful and unacceptable; and summoned the US ambassaodor to Nigeria to give clarification on the matter.
Essentially, Nigeria needs to hold herself in higher regard by providing basic amenities for her citizens and building hope through good governance. This is the only way to reduce many Nigerians’ desire to migrate to America and other countries and avoid being a subject of ridicule the world over.
