AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUHARI

-

It is with good mind that I resort to writing you this open letter. I am calling on you not to contest in the 2019 election. I urge you to bow out honourably with your head high. Sir, those clamouring for you to recontest are not doing any good as they are just trying to cling to your personality to stage a come back. It is important to stress the point that you have sacrificed much for this country, having fought in the 30 months civil war in order to save the country from breaking up. Your brief stay as the military head of state saw a great change in the attitude of Nigerians especially the foremost war against indiscpline.

This greatly impacted on the lives of all Nigerians. In the last two years, you significantly increased the fortunes of the citizens of the country. It beholves on you to forget about the clamour by the governors elected under the platform of your great party to go for 2019. This is because most if not all are just trying to cling to you to get a second tenure and not that they believe in your philosophy of honesty and commitment towards fighting corruption.

Sir, you have so far laid a solid foundation for growth of this country and the fight against corruption has got unprecedented acceptance by well meaning Nigerians.

Those asking you to go beyond 2019 are mere sycophants. What you need to do is to ponder over the issue and alternatively annoint a successor, who is relatively young and full of energy.

Sir, you need to take a bow and allow a vibrant young man to steer the ship. You should play an advisory role in guiding the person, that you anointed to steer the ship as it would go a long way in propelling him to do what you have done to better the lot of the citizenry. It is usual for those enjoying the crumbs and the perks of office to inundate you with calls to go beyond four years, because they would derive benefits. In fact, some of them now are dropping your name in committing grievious atrocities.

Sir, a lot of permutations has changed, unlike in 2015 where you had an easy ride especially in the northern states. You need to ponder a lot about your popularity rating and not to be carried away with how people are paid to line on the streets when you are on state visit to states. It is pure deceit conceived by the state governors to show you that the people are with you. Usman Santuraki, Jambutu, Jimeta-Yola
