As Nigerian women join their couneterparts across the world to celebate the International Women’s Day, the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, yesterday in Abuja, warned Boko Haram insurgents and others who abduct and perpetrate various harmful practices against women and innocent girls to halt the unwholesome acts.

In a statement, her media assistant, Suleiman Haruna, said Mrs. Buhari spoke at an event marking the 2018 International Women’s Day at the National Centre for Women Development.

According to the statement, Mrs. Buhari said the day should be marked with reflections in view of the sad incident of the earlier abduction of Chibok girls in 2014, some of which are still in captivity, and the recent kidnap of 110 girls in Dapchi, Yobe State, saying she shared in their mother’s sorrows.

“As a mother, I share the sorrow and agony of the parents at this time, it is my sincere hope that efforts by government will soon lead to their release,” she was quoted. According to the statement, Mrs. Buhari re-christened the theme of the event as “Leave our daughters alone,” describing it as a strong call for the end of abductions and charged the media to lead the campaign by spreading the message. She also called on wives of the state governors to propagate the campaign in their various states, stating that the message must be spread in every part of Nigeria and be on everyone’s lips.

“Leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone” she was further quoted.

The statement also said the wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, while speaking earlier, congratulated women as they marked the special day, saying it was sad that Nigerian women were witnessing the worst of times because of many negative things that were happening.

Haruna also said Mrs. Osinbajo however, noted that they were also witnessing the best of times in many respects because there are many good stories happening around women.
