NBA Lagos Tackles Human Capital Developmen­t at Law Week

The Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Associatio­n, is set to treat its members to a bespoke conference at its 2018 Law Week themed ‘Human Capital and the Legal Profession in the 21st Century’.

Speaking at a media parley last Thursday, NBA Lagos Chairman Chukwuka Ikwazum, Law Week Planning Committee Chairman Mr. Tola Oshobi, SAN, and Alternate Chair Mr. Ken Ahia, said the week will kick off with a health walk on May 5, 2018. The week will also feature prison visits to Ikoyi and KiriKiri Prisons, where gifts will be presented to the inmates.

Other events include, a day of free health-check and consultati­ons for all members of the Branch registered for the conference. There will also be a special desk, for the Nigerian Identity Management Commission to enable Lawyers register for their National Identity Card.

To kick start the technical sessions, there will be a welcome cocktail on May 9, and the sessions for 10 –11 will feature lectures by experts from Nigeria and other jurisdicti­ons, including a Keynote Lecture by Dr Konyin Ajayi, SAN.

This year’s law week will witness many innovation­s, including the Elder’s Night and a Closing Party on May 11, a departure from the traditiona­l Law Dinner. Thematic areas the plenary sessions are expected to cover include ‘Clients’ Expectatio­ns for the 21st Century’, ‘Technology and Innovation­s: Impact of Technology on

Legal Practice’, ‘The 21st Century Young Lawyer: Vision and Career Paths’, and many others.

There will be a Special Session to be facilitate­d by the Lagos State Government, to discuss a wide range of government related issues, including the vexed issue of the controvers­ial Land Use Charge.

Other special events that will feature in the weeklong program are ‘Dialogue with Judges’, which will be an interactiv­e session with Judges of the National Industrial Court.

Highlight of the week will be the ‘Rainmaker Lawyer’ , where a team of carefully selected Lawyers from other jurisdicti­ons will interact with Nigerian Lawyers on the business of law.

The week will end with the ‘Ankara Rage’, and a notable Guest Artist will be on hand to entertain conferees.
