...AND A SOLO SHOW IN MOOR HOUSE
Among other solo exhibitions in Lagos, another recently opened at the Moor House, Ikoyi. Titled New Possibilities, this show by Uchenna Uhagwu is the latest of solo shows in Lagos. It is a research-based project by an artist who has spent most of his career in an advertising firm as a graphic artist. “I have missed painting. I learn from friends who exhibit their works,” he said as he introduced a few of the 30 works carefully selected for the show. Having developed ideas into forms for story board productions, Uhagwu kept close to his creative muse. In a regimented field like advertising with deadlines and competition, finding time to do studio work can be daunting.
Still, Uhagwu worked with lines and symbols, using them to create a new set of codes for interpreting the nature of man and his sojourn through life.
“My painting is a pointer to life,’’ he said and he displayed a large canvas which is a part of the Beat Series. Some of the elements of his career as a graphic artist seeped into his fresh paintings.
He explained that the lines in his paintings are significant. They represent the discordance in our society, the highs and lows in people’s lives. In spite of the disparities in the human society, there still exists a sense of order in the disorder. Uhagwu promised that this show will serve as a precursor to his subsequent shows in terms of techniques and themes.
