Unknown Men Invade Abia School, Allegedly Gang Raped Female Students

- Chiemelie Ezeobi

Not less than 15 female students of Methodist Girls Model Secondary School in Ovim, Isuikwuato, Abia State, were alleged to have been raped by some unknown men.

The students were said to have been raped after the unknown men invaded the school at about 2a.m. last Friday.

It was also alleged that the girls were separated into virgin and non-virgins groups before they were raped and some others injured.

In a series of tweets that sent Twitter into a storm, Kayode Ogundamisi, a political commentator, tweeting from his handle revealed that the girls were raped under threat.

He said: “At least 15 students of the Methodist Girls Model Secondary School Ovim Isuikwuato, Abia State, were early Friday morning wounded when suspected rapists invaded their dormitory ordering them to strip.

“#AbiaGangRape #OvinGirlsRape Is a national disgrace. Girls should not have to live in fear in local schools.

“Gangs should not have the ability to invade local schools and subject our girls to terror. Abia State must not be allowed to cover up a crime against the vulnerable.”

Calling on the police to bring the suspects to book, he said: “@PoliceNG must bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Virgin girls separated from non virgins in a public school, raped, injured and left with broken lives and not a statement from the state government.

“No outrage from local non governmental organisations. The gang came and left unchallenged.”

When his attention was drawn to the Twitter thread by THISDAY, the Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications, Mr. Sam Hart, replied with a terse, ‘I am on it’.

As at press time, it was yet uncertain how the state government would respond to the allegations.
