Unity Bank Trains Students on Financial Literacy

In commemoration of the 2018 Children’s Day that was marked recently, Unity Bank Plc used the occasion to offer practical knowledge of banking to students of King’s College Lagos.

The exercise was to enable the students understand financial management.

The event took place at the bank’s head office in Lagos, where the students were led on a tour of some of the departments to see how banks work. They also had a talk session that focused on cyber-bullying, the challenge of drug abuse.

Speaking to journalists, Tomi Somefun, said the bank takes it as a responsibility to identify with children who are future leaders, stressing that teaching them money and how it works at such tender age was paramount.

South Bank, Unity Bank, Mr. Temisan Tuedor, noted that catching them young was not by saying but by practice.

“It’s what you teach now that they will take into the future. So, it’s very key we teach them financial literacy at this time because that is the way for the development of this country. So financial literacy is very paramount,” Somefun said.

She explained that it was also important the bank use the platform to talk to the students about cyberbullying and drug abuse -two issues she noted were threatening the society presently, and how to guard themselves against being victims.

“I also talked to them briefly on the need for them to value their selfesteem. Because it’s obvious that nobody can make you inferior without your consent.

“So, the kids must know that at this young age, that you cannot be bullied, that you must stick your ground; you must know what you want from life. And it’s very important that we teach all these things,” she added.

Commenting on their experience at the event, the school’s Captain, Master Omohwovo Uyota, described it as wonderful and interesting, saying “today they have made us proud.”
