Already, Obrador and United States President Donald Trump seem to maintain a warm relationsh­ip, despite his initial confrontat­ional attitude towards the US president while campaignin­g for the presidency.

Obrador said in his victory speech, “We will pursue a relationsh­ip of friendship and co-operation with the United States, always rooted in mutual respect and in the defence of our fellow Mexicans who live and work honourably in that country.”

Trump also tweeted a congratula­tory message to Obrador, saying, “I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico.”

In another congratula­tory message, US State Department spokespers­on Heather Nauert said in a statement Monday, “The United States and Mexico share a lasting friendship based on strong economic, cultural, and historical ties that bind our nations. The United States looks forward to deepening our vibrant partnershi­p with Mexico on security and prosperity for our citizens and our shared democratic values.

“We look forward to working with the Peña Nieto administra­tion during the transition period, and with President-elect Lopez Obrador when the new administra­tion takes office on December 1, to continue strengthen­ing our partnershi­p and advancing common goals for both our nations.”
