Glitz Meets Glamour as United States Celebrates 242nd Independence Anniversary
The lagoon breeze which blew relentlessly ushered the select guests into the expansive compound of the United States’ Consul General’s residence in Ikoyi. It was an important day for the chief hosts, United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington and Consul General, Mr. F. John Bray, as the duo celebrated 242nd independence anniversary of the most powerful country in the world. As early as 4.pm, Nigeria’s crème la crème trooped in: from top-notch politicians, banking chiefs, captains of industry, the media and diplomatic community. The music from a band provided ambience of comfort guests smiled, exchanged banters, catching up on old times. The hospitality of the Americans was also on display. Among the dignitaries were Ms. Susan Symington; Ms. Tokpa Bray, Minister of Foreign Affairs represented by Director of Presidential Lounge and Protocol, Mr. Dayo Adeoye; Chief Onike Akande; Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Dr. Orji Kalu, Dr. Dapo Abiodun, Mrs. Dupe Alakija; Pastor and Mrs. Paul Adefarasin. Others were James Ibori, High Chief Emami Ayiri, Dr. Goodie Ibru, Dare Art Alade; Dr. Mrs. Ezekwesili and others. Symington, speaking the occasion said 242nd Independence Day celebration represents the day America declared ‘Our Independence.’ Symington also extolled the virtue of Lagos. Commenting on governance and leadership, the US ambassador noted leadership and governance should not be left solely in the hands of the leaders who occupy political positions. He urged all to partake in governance. The minister for foreign affairs, congratulated the US on the ‘historic occasion’. “Our relationship with America has spanned over a century. We celebrate timeless, principles and the spirit of those who fought for the freedom of America. Over the years, America has continued to play her role as a friend of Nigeria.
