Last week on social media, Basketmouth cracked Femi Otedola’s ribs, God ‘speared’ Dino Melaye, there was a gust of Nigeria Air, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala got on board Twitter...

Social media - especially Twitter and Instagram – increasingly reflects the mood of the general public.

Thoughts and intentions are presented directly from source; unfiltered, and in many cases, on impulse. Previously seen as the playground of entertainers, social media is now a tool for politicians and businessmen also, to communicate directly with their followers.

Everyone seems to have caught the bug. This is typified by billionaire oil magnate, Femi Otedola, who joined both platforms this year. He regularly shares motivational words, as well as pictures chronicling his lifestyle.

So in tune is he, that he has been crowned “King of Instagram” by one of his daughters. At the moment, he has over 300,000 instagram followers. These are numbers he can influence directly in seconds from his phone.

Of course, the motive behind each post – and generally, his active social media presence - is something observers mull over.

Early in the week, he put up a picture with Basketmouth, taken in the popular comedian’s house. There is, surely, more to this than rib-cracking jokes.

Later in the week, fellow tycoon Tony Elumelu showed us a more relaxed side to him. The Heirs Holdings boss ditched the suit, white shirt and red tie for black tees, slacks and trendy black kicks. “New York is always a good idea,” he told his 272 thousand instagram followers.

Not so rosy for Dino Melaye, who after an alleged assassination attempt, got schooled by a Twitter troll. That’s the danger of social media; little protection from those throwing darts. Or spears.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s new national carrier was launched at the Farnborough Air Show in London. The brand, without planes. It’s fair to say the reactions are as polarised as the current political climate. Rueben Abati suggests it’s ‘air’ without

‘ways’. We say, what’s in a name?

Linda Ikeji wants to know too. With a selfnamed brand as big as some corporations, let’s just say she has more than a passing interest. But men care less these days, we believe. Ask Mr Wellington. He’s more enthralled by his wife’s attributes than the moniker she goes by.

Physical attributes and a lot of style were on show at the Elite Model Look Lagos, last week. Not only on the runway. Some guests stole the show. We have our favourites: Nenesi Ibru and Tania Omotayo were a picture-perfect twin-act.

Picture-perfect is what Apapa traffic isn’t. It is an eyesore, not to talk of the man-hours lost, as well as the security challenge it poses.

The Lagos State Government is at its wits’ end, surely. It stated the obvious reasons for the persistent gridlock without offering a solution. Rather, it pointed the finger at the Federal Government. Who will spare us?

Surely not Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who must have her hands full after yet another international appointment, this time as a director with social media behemoth, Twitter.

She “looks forward to contributing to the strong and visionary future for Twitter,” she said, and described it as a “global platform that is such a strong connector of people and ideas.” And, yes, she said this on Twitter.
