37 Jostle for Oyo APC Governorship Nomination

KPMG, Costain chief executives join race

- Ademola Babalola

The number of governorship aspirants seeking nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State swelled to 37 at the weekend as KPMG Partner, Mr. Joseph Tegbe and Managing Director of Costain (West Africa) Plc, Ayodeji Karim joined the race.

The duo declared their intention in separate news conferences they addressed in Ibadan yesterday, promising to turn the state around through technology, mechanised agriculture, job creation and trade and commerce.

At his news conference, Tegbe said creation of job opportunities for the teeming number of youths in the state would be his first priority within the first two years of his administration if elected.

He noted that his military background training in the British Army and experience in Engineering Design and Manufacturing from Wales University would help him create vast opportunities for the youths.

He noted that the state governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi had changed the face of governance in the state, claiming that he was on a good standing “to take off from where Ajimobi would stop in May 28, 2019.”

He justified his claim on the ground that he was part of the economic team of the Abiola Ajimobi administration and had steered a number of governance reforms in the state between 2011 and 2018. 2

He explained that turning the fortune of the state for the better “is not a rocket science. If offered opportunity to govern the state, I will pay more attention on quality education, basic healthcare and infrastructures principally on urban centres with special focus on rural roads to make farming more lucrative and accessible.”

At another forum, the managing director of Costain West Africa explained rationale behind his political aspiration, noting that it was borne out of the need “to consolidate on the efforts of all past governments in the state.”

He said he had prepared “to lay a foundation for the sociopolitical and economic development of our state with growthoriented ideas and policies as a main focus for running for the office of Oyo State Governor.”
