In what has been described as a blockbuster week, senators were cast as action heroes, an Assistant Commissioner of Police campaigned to ‘End SARS’ and Google revealed the top searches in Nigeria for 2018...

Nigeria’s social media was heavily tinged with political activity once again, with some personalities featuring prominently in what at times, seemed like a script from a James Bond movie. The dramatis personae again included Dino Melaye who was again, the name on everybody’s lips, or in this case on the fingers of social media warriors.

From an alleged failed assassination attempt penultimate week, it was an alleged kidnap case, in which he was reportedly blocked by a Toyota Sienna and abducted by armed men.

About 11 hours later, he surfaced. On Twitter. He had been through the wilderness he said. Not everyone was convinced. Certainly not the police or Sahara Reporters who claimed to have evidence that Melaye stage-managed his own abduction.

He wasn’t the only one accused of stagemanaging during a week dominated by actors and dancers. Senate President Bukola Saraki had his convoy blocked because, according to him, there was an attempt to stop defections from the APC to the PDP. He was also accused of stage-managing the blockade.

There were a few other cases where the word ‘block’ was used, leading some to suggest the week was a blockbuster one, in keeping with the movie theme.

Senators certainly occupied major roles in the drama. The week started with Ademola Adeleke - another senator - revelling in winning the PDP ticket for the forthcoming Osun gubernatorial election.

By the end of the week, he was bedevilled by accusations of certificate forgery. He has been ordered by a court to produce authentic certificates that prove he’s qualified to run for governor. Not yet time for the senator to break into dance it seems. He will need to tarry a while before exhibiting the dancing skills he has become famous for.

To be honest, it won’t be a surprise if he strikes a chord with the youths based on his predilection to “dance like Jackson” as his nephew Davido alluded to in one of his songs. After all, entertainment was high on the list of the top searches (in Nigeria) on Google for 2018.

Wizkid, how to dance shaku-shaku (the trending dance move among the young and young-at-heart), who the richest Nigerian musician is, and BB Naija featured prominently as revealed during the Google Nigeria event held in Lagos.

At the event, Google revealed plans to bring free wifi to millions of Nigerians across five cities through Google station. Already, five locations in Lagos already enjoy this benefit, including Computer Village and the MM2 Airport in Ikeja.

The global tech giant wasn’t spared by Nigerian youths online, after what was apparently, shoddy preparations that resulted in long queues outside the venue despite preregistration for the event.

The vitriol directed at Google however paled in comparison to what Yomi Shogunle - an Assistant Commissioner of Police - got from Ycee for an ‘End SARS’ comment dripping with sarcasm.

Ycee’s attack on Shogunle however seemed like child’s play after Femi Fani-Kayode let go – for the umpteenth time - at the country’s ruling party, the APC. Of course, Twitter being social media, he got a riposte from a troll who reminded him of his not-too-distant past.

Luckily, it wasn’t all barbs and offensive words as the football world including FIFA, sent goodwill messages to Carl Ikeme, the ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper who decided to retire from the game due to health issues. If only some Nigerian politicians will take a cue...
