The Federal Government has concluded plans for the upgrade of the Federal Road Safety Academy, Udi, in Enugu State to a full fledge degree awarding institution.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu who disclosed this, recently, when he received the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Ayeyemi, in Abuja, said he has directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to work out modalities for the upgrade of the academy in line with the necessary requirements for approval by government.

He said the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), will ensure the maintenance of standard in technical education while the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), will develop appropriate curriculum for inclusion of road safety as teaching subject at all primary and secondary school levels in the country.

Earlier, the Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi said the commission had held several discussions with the NUC and the NBTE on the issue; adding that the proposed upgrade to a degree awarding status would broaden the scope of academic activities and make the institution sustainable for growth and development.

According to him, “Consequent upon the recommendation of the NBTE, the institution would be relocated from Jos to Shendam, where the Plateau State Governor, Mr. Simon Lalong, has donated a large expanse of land for the purpose.”

He stressed that the academy was not a new creation, but a desire to upgrade it for greater efficiency in the area of road safety management which will be the first of its kind in Africa.

“The academy in Plateau State, will continue to award diplomas while the one in Udi, Enugu State, will be upgraded to a degree awarding status.”
