Guinness Holds Safety Week for Coy’s Workers Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City
In order to ensure safety at the work place, Guinness Nigeria PLC, Benin Plant has organised a safety week for its workforce, transporters and drivers. Speaking at the event in Benin City, Guinness Director of Supply, Colman Hanna, said because of the premium the company placed on safety, it decided to organise the three days programme to bring everybody together to look at those things that causes harm.
Hanna, who was represented by the Director of Site, Mr. Adebayo Alli, said the safety programme served as an opportunity particularly for the drivers and transporters of Guinness products to have restraints, observe safely rules whenever they are on the road by not drinking and driving.
“By the time the programme is completed, it will serve as a special knowledge to the drivers and transporters on best practices especially for vehicles and ensure the mechanical aspect are properly taken care of”, he said.
He also noted that some of the highlights include how the participants can take care of their health, such as periodic eye test, blood sugar and blood pressure in order to bring safety on the roads.
Speaking also, Transport/Logistics Manager, Oluwafemi Adebayo; Regional Manager (East), Magnus Amaechi, and National Transport Manager, Guinness, Adeyemi Adedeji, told journalists that the three-day event would train 200 drivers daily.
They said to ensure safety compliance, the company has installed tracking devices on all the over 1,000 that lift it’s products.
The trio also disclosed that the company maintains a clinic where drivers can go periodically to have medical checkup like eye test and their blood pressure because they have had cases of drivers collapsing on the wheel.
Guinness, they pointed out has rules of engagement that must be adhered to- like financial capability of transporters to pay their staff, proper vehicle maintenance, tracking devices to prevent over speeding, as well as an ambulance in case of any accident.
Addressing participants at the event, Edo State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Kyrian Okoh, noted that safety in any operational environment is key, especially when it involves transport and logistics.
He observe that the theme of the programme: “Be Safe” with the acronym Smart, Alert, Focused Education, further shows that the firm is committed to the safety of its staff and third party workforce in and out of the company’s premises.
The Edo FRSC Sector Commander, who was represented by the Deputy Corps Commander, Udensi Oji, while commending management of Guinness for the programme, said the Road Marshal is always happy to be in a forum or gathering where safety is being promoted, adding that such compliments their preaching to motorists on the road.
He said: “To be a good driver, you need all the good qualities. We want to commend Guinness for putting this programme together for its staff, transporters and drivers. By the end, it will be enough for them to know the need to observe safety.
“That if you want to drink while driving, only drink water; that it is important you put on your seat belt anytime you are driving; that intimidating smaller vehicles on the road is not good; that you must show restraint and do thing that will guarantee safety not only for yourself, but for all other road users”.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of gift items to some of the participants who overtime had displayed good conduct.
