THISDAY

As the Holiday is Over

-

Most Nigerians don’t like to be “left out”, to use the notable lingo. So they wouldn’t mind going out of their ways to be counted in a new way of life or trend.

Before now, some privileged Nigerians have been observing regular holidays overseas in summer. Of course, it doesn’t matter whether Nigeria is blessed with almost permanent winter just like the cold weather is synonymous to Western nations. But the level at which talks on summer holiday and the desire to not miss one goes on amongst most Nigerians these days is curious.

The enthusiasm and discussion around summer holiday is as important amongst family-friends and parents just as the way their children treat each other with thrilling details on the journey and places to visit.

As such, and as earlier said, parents now go out of their ways literally to mark the rituals of summer holiday so as not to be seen to be “left out”.

One can only hope that the frenzy to be part of the excitement of jetting out of the country does not drive people to spend money meant for school fees and other more pressing needs.

And as another summer winds down and school resumption date draws nigh, it shouldn’t turn out that the collections of pictures from vacation are as heavy as tuition fees and other essentials. Should that be the case, it will be a very long postsummer hangover.
