- Emmanuel Ugwu

Chris Isiguzo, the Enugu State correspondent of THISDAY Friday emerged the president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in a keenly contested election at the 6th triennial delegates conference at Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Reacting to the victory, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi congratulated Isiguzo on his victory and charged him to use the platform to impact positively on the country and the journalism profession which was his primary constituency.

He defeated seven other candidates, including the incumbent, Abdulwaheed Odusile to coast home to victory. Isiguzo polled 346 votes to confine Odusile to second position with 329 votes.

The result of the election which lasted from Thursday night to early hours of Friday was announced by the returning officer, Comrade Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs, Nigeria Labour CCongress (NLC).

He said that election was “highly competitive”, adding that the national credentials committee was not only vigilant but also fair to all the contestants to ensure a credible and transparent poll.

First national president of NUJ, Comrade George Izobo while congratulating the newly elected NUJ president said that his emergence was historical as “he is coming to office at a critical time in Nigeria’s history.”

He also noted that Isiguzo’s emergence was significant since he was from the marginalised part of Nigeria.
