Group Urges Security Forces, Youths to Uphold Electoral Laws

- Hamid Ayodeji

The Concerned Nigerians Group (CNG) has organised a forum to urge the youths and security agencies to conduct themselves in line with the electoral laws during the forthcoming general elections.

The group organised the campaign to educate citizens on issues concerning security and the importance of obeying the electoral laws.

Disclosing this to journalists at a media briefing in Lagos, the Coordinator for CNG, Edris Olukoya, noted the need for caution in this period, adding that there are some individuals conducting criminal acts because of the elections.

Olukoya said: “We saw the need to organise this campaign so as to educate the citizens on security consciousness and the punishment attached to any electoral violations, if found guilty.”

On his part, the Chief Superintendent of Police in Lagos State, Chinedu Chimereze, said: “The youths going to the polling unit to constitute some form of violence should know it is not worth getting injured or dying for, rather they should conduct themselves in a peaceful way so as to ensure a peaceful environment during the forthcoming general elections.’’

Also speaking at the event; an assistant officer for Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Khadijat Lawal, disclosed that at the end of the elections the results will be announced through an electronic media in order to prevent vote tampering.

“Please do away with the act of buying and selling votes, it is a crime, hence anyone caught doing such will be prosecuted according to the law of the country.”

She also explained that voters should come to the polling Unit with their PVC or else they will not be allowed to vote.

“Do not engage in electoral violence or acts that will disturb the flow of free and fair election,’’ she added.
