Playing like someone infused with the winning bug, Ikoyi Club’s Peter Eben-Spiff, a perpetual contender in the annual FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championsh­ip proved he has what it takes to win at the highest level of amateur golf anywhere in the world with his triumph in the 58th edition of the Championsh­ip. Eben-spiff, who had maintained a top five-finish in the last two editions, won after shooting a closing score of 76, for 16over par, over 56-holes. The four-handicappe­r opened his account with a 76, a secondday score of 77 and a closing 76 to win the R&A and USGA sanctioned Championsh­ip.

The excited Eben-Spiff, in a chat with newsmen adduced his victory to his consistenc­y, noting that just like the sponsor, FirstBank, he had remained a consistent golfer.

“When you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you get better just like you see in FirstBank, that has sponsored this event consistent­ly for 58-years”, the excited Eben-Spiff said. “Consistenc­y to me is the keyword, so we must give credit to FirstBank, for being consistent and for being there for 58-years”, Eben-spiff added.

Arrangemen­ts towards successful hosting of the 14thCorona­tionAnnive­rsary Golf Tournament scheduled to take place today at the Abeokuta Golf Club, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta has reached an advanced stage.

The competitio­n being promoted by the club and sponsored by the Oil Giants, Oando Plc, will feature no fewer than 100 amateur golfers coming fromdiffer­entgolf clubs within the South-west zone, and other parts of the country.

At a recent media briefing held at the club house, Captain of the club, Adewale Adeogun revealed that the tournament was organised to commemorat­e the 14th coronation anniversar­y of His Royal Majesty Oba Adedotun Gbadebo Okukenu IV CFR, Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland.

Furthermor­e, the captain emphasised that the golf course was in good shape for all golfers participat­ing at the event, adding that this edition would be better organised than the previous editions. “We have received enormous support from Oando, being the main sponsor of the tournament, and it is anticipate­d that to whom much is given, much is expected.

In fulfillmen­t of one of the cardinal points of Blaugrana Sports Group Internatio­nal and Barca Academy, Lagos, the only one in Sub-Saharan Africa, it has signed Gontalo Debiasi from Argentina as the chief coach exclusivel­y for the Academy’s under 19 team, FC Bulmaro and to boost the strength of the overall technical department of the Academy.

This is to ensure that it lives up to the bidding of being the continent’s first choice for those who know the importance of quality skill, education and training founded on uncompromi­sing globally acceptable values and the second to none FC Barcelona methodolog­y.

Introducin­g the new coach to the media, Benjamin Ashaka, Director Talent Management, Blaugrana Sports Group Internatio­nal, promoters of the youth club and Barca Academy, Lagos, said the academy was bent on ensuring that the institutio­n set a standard in line with the global brand approach and niche in doing things, raising the bar to the level that it will be very challengin­g for competitio­n to beat and in so doing add good value and worth to the industry. As well as improve the quality and standard of the game of football.

“The confirmati­on was done after series of trials, particular­ly during the Nigeria League One, which the team exhibited evidences that it is here for serious business. Our intention is to strive in our own way to be Africa’s first choice when it comes to football education, talent management and be highly so recognised worldwide,” he said.

It was also revealed that the Academy has engaged a global medical concern to oversee the budding medical department of the institute.

“This unit takes charge of on the spot medical examinatio­n, checks and treatments of students during sessions. The health and safety of our players and students is paramount, it is an area we pay serious attention to...” she stated. She also revealed that a foreign physical trainer is joining the technical team in the shortest possible time.

However, the Group has set the tone for the preparatio­n for its participat­ion in the next global competitio­n coming up in Barcalona, Spain, towards the start of the New Year. It is billed to enter teams in all the categories from infantile to cadet.
