Fresh Crisis Hits Kano PDP

- Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano

Fresh crisis is brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State over the replacement of the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Nazifi Gamawa, which has been allegedly described as a “kangaroo selection.”

Not satisfied with the selection of the party’s deputy national chairman, the Chairman of National Youth Collation for the Survival of PDP, Alhaji Salisu M. Muhammad, addressed journalists in Kano yesterday where he vehemently rejected the outcome of the selection meeting held last week in Bauchi.

The group expressed dismay over what it called ‘kangaroo selection’ and unconstitutional ways of selecting new deputy national chairman without consulting members, stakeholders and even the three PDP governors of Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states. The youths vehemently rejected the unconstitutional process arising from the selection of the new deputy national chairman, instead of conducting the elections as provided by the party’s constitution.

“All the members of the PDP Board of Trustees, caucus and party chairmen in the zone were the ones responsible for the choice of the new deputy national chairman, but unfortunately something unconstitutional happened along the line.

“The zonal PDP executives sat in Bauchi and conducted a kangaroo selection and picked Senator Nazifi Gamawa to replace late Babayo Gamawa who had earlier defected to APC,” the youths alleged.

Muhammad called on the PDP national leadership to reject the unconstitutional selection of the new deputy national chairman, saying nine people aspired to the vacant position over nine months when late Gamawa resigned.

“It is unfortunate that constitutional process was not followed in electing the new deputy national chairman. We wonder why a kangaroo selection process was embraced to pick Senator Nazif Gamawa as replacement to late Babayo instead of conducting an election that will include all major stakeholders. We have rejected the replacement because constitutional process was not followed.
