Insurgency: Military Air Strikes Destroy ISWAP Hideout in Borno

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) yesterday deployed fighter jets that bombarded the hideout of terrorist group, Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) killing scores of insurgents.

The attack aircraft, operating under the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, struck the hideout of the insurgents in Muktu, northern Borno State, destroying logistics stores of the terrorists.

Awar update issued by theActing Director, Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Bernard Onyeuko, said the air interdicti­on was part of Operation Decisive Edge launched by the military to contain insurgents, who surrounded themselves with hostages and mines in Sambisa Forest.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria has destroyed some structures belonging to elements of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in air strikes conducted at Muktu in the Northern part of Borno State.

“The mission was executed by the Air Component of Operation Lafiya Dole yesterday, March 25, 2020, as part of the ongoing subsidiary Operation Decisive Edge, after Intelligen­ce, Surveillan­ce and Reconnaiss­ance (ISR) flights indicated that the ISWAP elements were using some compounds in two locations within the settlement to store their logistics as well as train their fighters.”

According to the update, fighter jets were deployed to engage the identified compounds, scoring accurate hits leading to the destructio­n of the structures as well as the neutralisa­tion of their occupants.

It further said “the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in furtheranc­e of the objective of restoring peace and security in the North-east, will continue to sustain the offensive against the enemies of our nation”.
