Oromoni’s Family Still Crying for Justice

-

Who is behind the delay tactics to deny justice to the family of the 12-year-old Junior Secondary School student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, who was purportedly tortured to death by some senior students that wanted him initiated into a cult group?

This is the question on the lips of many who have been following the case with keen interest since the young Oromoni died on November 30, 2022.

Despite the promise by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu that he would ensure that justice was served on the case, the state govern- ment has been dragging its feet on the matter.

Even when the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) had recommended in the DPP Advice of December 30, 2021 that some identified members of staff of the college be charged to court, all the indicted staff are still walking free without being prosecuted.

It has also been alleged that the same delay tactics are being used to frustrate the ongoing coroner inquest, which commenced since January 21, 2022.

Dowen College has also reportedly refused to provide the two witnesses who are currently in the school, as recommended by the Coroner.

The father of the deceased student, Mr. Sylvester Oromoni, had in a signed statement released on Tuesday, threatened that if the inquest was not concluded before the end of this year, he would be compelled to withdraw from it “in order to take a different legal step to seek justice.”

He noted with concern that the coroner inquest of the Ikoyi building collapse of 2021 where 52 persons died did not take this protracted time.

Also, the inquest on the Ojota Yoruba rally where one Miss Jumoke Oyeleke died had since been concluded, he added.

“Today, November 30, 2022 makes it a year since the demise of my son and the body is still in the morgue, yet to be buried. This one-year memorial being held today is to tell Nigerians and the entire world about the current position of the inquest and the antics of Dowen College,” he said.

“At this point, I wish to call on the Honourable Coroner to please do the needful by urgently bringing the inquest to an end as Nigerians and the entire world are waiting for the dispensation of justice in this case as justice delayed, justice denied,” he added.

The question is: If the powerful politicians behind Oromoni family’s frustrations escape man’s justice, will they escape the wrath of God?
