Moghalu Briefs EU on Nigerian Economy, Named Fellow of AIA

President of the Institute for Governance and Economic Transforma­tion (IGET) and CEO of Sogato Strategies LLC, Abuja, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, at the invitation of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria, has briefed the diplomatic missions of the member countries in Nigeria on the Nigerian economy.

The event which took place at the EU Mission in Abuja, was chaired by Zissimos Vergos, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.

It had in attendance ambassador­s and senior diplomats of 19 EU countries represente­d in Nigeria – Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Hungary, and Netherland­s. Others are Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden.

The event, according to a statement in Abuja, was held against the backdrop of economic reforms introduced by the administra­tion of President Bola Tinubu and the cost of living crisis that has resulted as a consequenc­e.

Moghalu’s briefing, titled “Nigeria’s Economy in 2024: Prospects and Challenges”, included an independen­t assessment of the present inflationa­ry trend in the economy.

It also dealt with foreign exchange pressures, foreign investment, manufactur­ing and productivi­ty, as well as steps taken by the government of Nigeria to meet the challenges.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also made recommenda­tions on specific steps the EU countries can take to support Nigeria’s economic recovery.

A robust dialogue between Moghalu and the European diplomats followed his briefing, the statement said.

Moghalu was also recently the keynote speaker at the LEADERSHIP Newspapers 2024 Conference and Awards with the theme “An Economy in Distress: Which Way Forward?”.

Separately, Moghalu was one of 24 distinguis­hed Nigerians, mostly former Ministers of Foreign Affairs, retired Foreign Service Officers who served as Ambassador­s, Professors of Internatio­nal Relations, and two retired military generals with extensive Internatio­nal security experience, who were inducted as Fellows of the Academy of Internatio­nal Affairs, Nigeria at the Academy’s official inaugurati­on yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

The event was chaired by former Military Head of State Gen. Dr. Yakubu Gowon, while Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of the African Export Import Bank (Afreximban­k), delivered the keynote address and was also inducted as Honorary Fellow of the Academy.

The Academy of Internatio­nal Affairs (AIA) is a private think tank founded by former External Affairs Minister, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi.

Its purpose is to provide advice to the federal government as well as insight and education to the Nigerian public, civil society and the private sector on internatio­nal affairs in order to strengthen Nigeria’s standing in the world.
