They are gaining momentum, not being passive as in the past. It is a global phenomenon but particularly noticed in developing due to various programmes and policies targeted at women.
Such increase of women engaged in business activities is also recorded in Nigeria especially in the Northern region. Among the increasing number of women in business is Hajiya Maryam Muhammad Korau. She deals in women apparels and presently she is the Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) of MK unique collection an outfit that introduced a new mode of women attires within and outside the country.
She told Daily Trust that she started the business just like any other normal Northern Nigerian women business of buying and selling women wears. “For the fact that my husband works in the banking sector we hardly stay in one station for long and that has affected my business plans greatly. Therefore, I started by selling in pieces and on demand. It was during this period that I came to realized that, with a little innovation I can move my kind of business forward that was how I started using the social networks in advertising my wears and within a short period I was amazed on how popular MK collections is,” she stated.
Hajiya Maryam further revealed that, it wasn’t as easy as it seems for a housewife and a mother to successfully run a business outfit without challenges adding that without her husband’s support and understanding of the business processes, it wouldn’t have been possible for her to get through successfully.
“It was an idea I initiated using the social media as a medium through which I made my supplies to different business partners within and outside Nigeria. The mode is a little bit new here and through my established business chains I was able to sell my wears in China, London and Ghana. Similarly, I have established a wider network business connection within the Nigerian shores to the extent that I deliver to all the 36 states,” said Hajiya Maryam.
She further revealed that the agitation of business being male dominated domain will soon be history as women all over the world have taken the challenge to be more independent and self-reliant through businesses. According to her, though all the positive transformation the women business community recorded wouldn’t have been possible without the men’s support. “It may interest you to know that businessmen these days have grown to believe that the women have come of age. Therefore, the men don’t hesitate in given their support to the women, perhaps it is the realization that we have come to take over the mantle of leading the business sector,” she concluded.
