Over 1,000 residents of Wuse and Maitama in Abuja yesterday jostled to get included in the 185 available slots of empowerment programmes organised by the councilor representing Wuse ward in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Matthias Aliu, Daily Trust Saturday reports.
It was gathered that stringent measures were used to weed out many applicants for the programme which entailed training of 150 unemployed youths in the area of Cosmetology, fish farming, catering, baking, phone and laptop repairs, event management, beadmaking and poultry.
Addressing newsmen during flag-off of the programme, Aliu, who doubles as the majority leader of the legislative council of AMAC, noted that a committee set up to assess the poverty level among the residents of Aso Drive, Wuse Zones and Maitama, ensured youths who have been roaming the streets were selected.
