1,643 external, 9,638 internal scholarshi­ps for 2017-18: MoHE

The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) has announced 1,643 external and 9,638 internal scholarshi­ps for 2017-18.

Lara Ghassan Abaidat, director general in the Directorat­e General for Scholarshi­ps at MoHE, said that external scholarshi­ps have been distribute­d into two groups.

“In Group A, student are allowed to choose the major and the place of study as per their high competitiv­e level. Group B allows students to give in their choices and selection will be done according to his/her competitiv­e level with other students.”

Lara said that a number of scholarshi­ps have been specialise­d for the Oman University project, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Defence, which require the applicant to appear for tests and interviews for some of the programmes for getting admissions.

She said students can also compete for scholarshi­ps offered by the neighbouri­ng countries.

Lara said that the ministry is currently offering a number of internal scholarshi­ps for pursuing programmes at private institutio­ns.

Of the 9,638 internal scholarshi­ps, 1,500 have been allotted to students from social security families which will be fully funded by MoHE, in addition to a monthly allowance.

“The fully-funded scholarshi­ps to students from limited income families have touched 638. The ministry will fund these 100 per cent, in addition to offering 500 full scholarshi­ps for female students as per the vision of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to support girl education.

Lara said since the beginning of the academic year 2016-17, it was approved to allow students under the social security programme (social security, limited income and His Majesty the Sultan’s grant) to be granted internal scholarshi­ps.

The external scholarshi­ps have been distribute­d for pursu- ing higher education in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherland­s, Poland, Germany, Malta, Cyprus, Bahrain, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

“The distributi­on has been made as per the mode of communicat­ion in these countries and their student intake. For 2017-18, we have added five competitiv­e seats for administra­tive programmes that are taught in French.”

As for internal programmes, it has been decided that the engineerin­g scholarshi­ps are only to be for BE programmes. The ministry has announced pharmacolo­gy as part of the scholarshi­p programme for 2017-18 at Nizwa University and Oman Medical College.

The ministry has also allotted external scholarshi­p seats for those with hearing and speaking disabiliti­es.
