Apollo Hospital Muscat enhances orthopaedic, urology departments
Apollo Hospital Muscat announced the latest upgradation of its orthopaedic and urology departments.
Dr A N Nagaraj will introduce genitourinary surgery to the urology department while Professor Dr Vladmir Martinek, a senior consultant in orthopaedics and traumatology from Germany, the hospital officials stated during a media briefing at City Seasons Hotel on Wednesday.
Debraj Sanyal, COO, Apollo said, “The move towards these specialities has been due to the considerable number of patients who are seeking medical care abroad for these specific health problems. We felt it is our duty as a private sector member to provide the services right here. We are committed to bring best global healthcare practices and standards to Oman at an affordable cost as per the guidance of the Ministry of Health.”
Dr Martinek, who has visited Oman several times, said, “The most common sports injury is Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Another area of concern is osteoarthritis (OA), especially in women but it can also affect men. Sunlight is important but maybe because of the outside temperature there seems to be lack of outdoor activities and movement.
“These situations result in developing joint problems in women above 50 years of age; that is a young age. We should move more. Also, the lack of vitamin D is a factor. Today most of the procedures are minimally invasive resulting in early recovery post surgery. New methods are now available for ACL and meniscus.”
Dr Nagaraj said the prostate cancer is the number one cancer in ageing males. Kidney and bladder cancers are also common in addition to urinary tract infection (UTI). Infertility is an- other factor. Another common condition found in ageing males is benign prostatic enlargement.
“Preventive strategy has always been to consume at least three to four litres of water a day. The situation is even more crucial for people who work outdoors in higher temperatures.
“They are prone to develop kidney stones. But the situation is also similar for people who consume high level of animal protein or salt.”
