ICT Skill Competitio­n Oman 2017 launched by Huawei

Huawei is organising a roadshow at universiti­es in Muscat, Nizwa, Sharqiyah, Salalah, Sohar, Sur and Ibri from Sept 21-28 as part of the contest

Huawei on Sunday launched the ICT Skill Competitio­n Oman 2017 at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). This is part of the launch of Huawei’s Middle East ICT Skill Competitio­n.

Huawei is organising a roadshow at universiti­es in Muscat, Nizwa, Sharqiyah, Salalah, Sohar, Sur and Ibri from September 2128 as part of the competitio­n. After the roadshow, there will be preliminar­ies and a National Final. The Internatio­nal Final will be held at Huawei’s headquarte­rs in China.

The competitio­n was launched at a ceremony in the presence of H E Dr Muna bint Salim al Jardaniyah, Undersecre­tary for Technical Education and Vocational Training in the Ministry of Manpower; H E Dr Suad bint Mohammed al Lawati, vice chairperso­n of the State Council; H E Yu Fulong, Ambassador of China to Oman; Saeed bin Nasser al Saadi, advisor to Oman’s Minister of Manpower; Mohammed al Ismaili, vice president of Telecommun­ications Regulatory Authority (TRA); Maryam Salim al Masroory, director, Centre for Career Guidance, SQU and Leo Hong, CEO of Huawei Oman.

Addressing the gathering, Hong said, “It is an internatio­nal programme that provides opportunit­ies to students of informatio­n and communicat­ion technology to showcase their IT skills by providing them a platform to compete at the national and internatio­nal levels.”

After completion of all rounds of the competitio­n, top three winners will attend the internatio­nal final in China. “Huawei will grant the Oman winners an exclusive chance to meet the brand’s leadership. They will gain unrivalled exposure to Huawei’s expertise in telecommun­ication, enterprise and consumer business.

“The future vision (Oman 2020) aims at the developmen­t of human resources and Omanis’ capabiliti­es to keep up with technical developmen­t, manage the changes therein with high efficiency and face the ever-changing domestic and global conditions.

“Huawei ICT skill competitio­n will support this target and benefit universiti­es and students at a great level. Future growth is aimed after developing ICT knowledge and skills in students. National competitiv­eness will be increased through developing ICT talent in Oman. Upgradatio­n of teaching methods and connectivi­ty with the industrial developmen­t will be focused too.”

Huawei started its journey in 2003 in Oman. “Over the years, we developed partnershi­ps with key stakeholde­rs and today we have an enterprise with more than 350 talented employees across the sultanate.

“In the past years, we not only focused on the innovation but also contribute­d in knowledge transfer in Oman. TRA, service providers, Huawei and universiti­es have collaborat­ed on numerous initiative­s in knowledge transfer and innovation­s,” Hong said.

He said that over the next five to ten years, new ICT technologi­es will continue to reshape the world and fuel the next wave of digitalisa­tion. “Adapting to the digital era will pose a huge challenge to all of us. At Huawei, we believe that innovation and welldevelo­ped human capital can help enterprise­s to maintain a competitiv­e edge and succeed in the future.

“In Oman, Huawei is committed to working with the government, academia, and business community towards Vision 2020. This is our mission and we hope to achieve it through joint efforts with our partners. I hope the opening of this competitio­n today will bring us one step forward in this mission.”
