Al Shabab shocks Dhofar in Salalah
Last season's runner-up Al Shabab upset hosts defending champion Dhofar 2-1 in the second round of the Omantel League at the Al Sa'ada Sports Complex in Salalah on Sunday.
In a match marred by frayed tempers, both the teams had a player sent off in the 55th minute of the match. Shabab's Omar al Malki missed a penalty in the 28th minute after the hosts went ahead with a second-minute goal through Lawson.
Fenisio got the equaliser for Shabab in the 82nd minute and Mohammed al Siyabi stunned the Dhofar supporters and the team with an injury-time winner.
Elsewhere, in an early kick-off, Al Nasr defeated Al Mudhaibi 2-0 to go top of the league after two successive wins. It leads the table on goal-difference from Al Shabab.
In the other matches on Sunday, Sohar held Muscat 1-1 while Al Arouba edged past Mirbat 1-0. At the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, former champions Al Suwaiq won a thrilling encounter against Oman 3-2.
Hatem Hamhami put Oman ahead in the ninth minute but the advantage was cancelled when Yaseen al Shiyadi got the equaliser for Suwaiq seven minutes later. A minute later, Hamhami put Oman ahead again but Ali al Busaidi drew parity near the half-hour mark.
In-form national team player Khalid al Hajri struck the third goal a minute before the halftime. Neither teams managed to score a goal in the second half.
It was Suwaiq’s second successive win and is third on table with the top three teams having the same number of points. Other results: Fanja 1 Al Salam 2, Saham 4 Al Nahda 2.
