-

The new German embassy premises in the Diplomatic Area in Al Khuwayr was officially opened on Tuesday.

It has been constructed in only 19 months, stated a press release.

The new embassy with its modern iconic design by Hoehler + alSalmy (H+S), reflects the new era of Omani architectural identity. The complex includes the embassy offices as well as the ambassador’s residence encompassed by the traditional plantation of the sultanate.

The distinctive structure illustrates the finest combination of traditional Omani architecture with the highest German building standards.

“It has been a great pleasure for Hoehler + alSalmy and its team to have been the lead architectural and engineering consultant in designing the new German Embassy in Muscat,” said Muhammad Sultan al Salmy, managing partner of Hoehler + alSalmy (H+S).

The official opening took place in the presence of Prof Norbert Lammert, president of the German Bundestag (parliament), H E Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, chairman of the State Council and H E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs.

In a message conveyed by H E Thomas Schneider, Ambassador of Germany to Oman, the Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel highlighted Germany’s deep trust in a prosperous future of the sultanate by building a new embassy in Muscat.

“Our new embassy underlines Germany’s commitment to close and sustainable relations with the sultanate. It is supposed to send to the people of Oman a strong signal of friendship and cooperation. It fits into the scope and quality of our excellent relations. Germany and Oman share many values. For decades, the Sultanate of Oman has pursued a foreign policy based on the principles of equality, dialogue, settlement of disputes through peaceful means, a policy of respect for the rules of international law and for the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. We live in a time of growing tensions and conflicts, not least in the Middle East and the Gulf region,” stated the message.

“Against this background, countries like Germany and Oman are called upon to join hands in order to spread a culture of conflict-prevention, deescalation, de-militarisation, disarmament and confidencebuilding.“
