New Thai ambassador stresses on strengthening bilateral ties
As the new ambassador of Thailand to Oman, H E Suwat Kaesook has several plans for better relationships between the sultanate and his country.
While more than 100,000 Omanis travelled to Thailand last year, the number is expected to increase by the end of this year. Most of the tourists (both Omanis and expatriates) visit Thailand for leisure, medical and business purposes.
H E Kaesook said, “My first aim as the ambassador is to have Omanis and Thai people sit and talk. It is only through dialogue that we get to know one another better. Thereafter, other aspects like business, tourism and investment will flourish. This is good for both the countries. Last year we invited businessmen, author- ities and media to visit Thailand and get to know the country more closely.”
He added that the trade vol- ume has increased to nearly US$700mn.
“Thailand exports spare parts, air-conditioners, petrochemical products, furniture and consumer products. Sea and agricultural products are very popular among Thai people.”
On medical tourism, H E Kaesook said, “The hospitals are well-prepared to handle patients from the Gulf and mainly Oman. Most hospitals have a dedicated team, fluent in Arabic and well versed in the culture. There are prayer rooms as well as halal food for our guests so that they are comfortable and have a good stay. Most of the patients who come from Oman look for treatment in cardiology and orthopaedics. They also come for general check-ups.”
In 2017, Thailand issued 4,000 visas for expatriates. Omanis are exempted from Thai visa.
