Sizzling Swiatek cements number one spot ahead of French Open Muscat Super Kings, Muscat Panthers win in OC’s Tennex ball tourney

Paris, France - Iga Swiatek, who won her fifth tournament in a row in Rome on Sunday, will go into the French Open as top seed after consolidat­ing her place as world number one on Monday.

The 20-year-old Pole, who won the title at Roland Garros in 2020, is over 2,000 points ahead of defending French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in the new WTA rankings.

Tunisia’s Madrid Open champion Ons Jabeur, who lost to Swiatek in the Italian Open final, climbed to a career-high sixth.

Coco Gauff dropped three places to 18th while former number one Simona Halep returned to the top 20 at 19.

Muscat: Muscat Super Kings registered an easy victory at the Oman Cricket’s 10-over Tennex Ball tournament, which started at the Municipali­ty Grounds last Friday.

A total of 19 matches were played on the first week, with the next set of fixtures scheduled for May 20.

Batting first after winning the toss, Super Kings made a mammoth 121 for 6. Vishal Parshomtta­mbhai Desai led the scoring with 36 runs off just 15 deliveries. The Kings were superb with the ball too, restrictin­g WCC to 70 runs to wrap up a dominant 51-run victory.

The clash between Deccan Challenger­s and Muscat Panthers was also a one-sided affair. Challenger­s made a modest 59 for 4 which Panthers chased down in in just four overs with all 10 wickets intact, thanks to an explosive 47-run knock from

Tenarangam Yeduru.

Meanwhile the match between, Max XI and the Bombay Blues ended in a tie.

Aksaar Aslam Sardar of Tuluvers XI, with 59 runs, recorded the highest individual total of the first week.

With the ball, Haja Hameed of Proline Knight Riders was the star of the week. His two overs produced four wickets at the cost of just seven runs.
