The Ministry of Health (MoH) facilitated kidney transplant of two Omani children at The Royal Hospital recently.

In a statement, MoH said, ‘The Royal Hospital has succeeded in transplanting kidneys in two Omani children - Durar and Aseel - who suffered kidney failure. A brain dead person donated his kidneys to the children to give them a new lease of life.’

In an interview on Oman TV, Salima Salem al Saadi, mother of Durar, said, “My daughter had been suffering for six years. We thank God and the family of the person who donated.”

According to Abdullah Saleh al Balushi, father of Aseel, his child has had kidney ailments for the last eight years. “The transplantation has been successful and we thank God that we found a donor to relieve our suffering.”

Dr Neven bint Ibrahim al Kalbani, senior consultant of pediatric nephrology and head of Organ Transplant Department at The Royal Hospital, informed that such procedures are part of the national organ transplantation programme.

“The programme involves the efforts of several hospitals in the sultanate to help patients find medically qualified donors to restore their lives again,” Dr Neven said.

Urging people to donate organs, Dr Mohammad al Riyami, senior nephrology consultant at The Royal Hospital, said, “We have many children who need organs to save their lives.”

Currently, there are approximately 2,500 patients with renal failure on haemodialysis and 200 patients on proton dialysis in the sultanate. Fifty children under the age of 13 are on some form of dialysis, according to MoH data.

Salima informed that following Durar’s kidney transplant, her medication has reduced significantly and her daughter is both physical and mentally stronger.
