The Ministry of Education (MoE), on Sunday, unveiled details of a plan to set up nine new schools in Dhofar governorate.

The decision came in implementation of Royal Directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to establish 76 more government schools across the sultanate.

Yaqoub bin Saif al Shehimi, director general of Directorate General of Education in Dhofar, informed that seven schools will be set up in the wilayat of Salalah, and one each in the wilayats of Mirbat and Al Mazyouna.

According to Shehimi, the schools will accommodate about 9,540 students of the governorate of different grades. The schools will add around 320 classrooms, and have administrative offices for teachers, computer rooms and laboratories. The schools will also have playgrounds and facilities for sports, providing avenues for children to excel in extracurricular activities.

In March 2022, MoE unveiled details of its plan to set up 76 new schools in different parts of Oman. The new schools will reduce student density in classrooms and the number of evening classes.

Of the 76 schools, 19 will be set up in Muscat, 17 in North Batinah, 11 in South Batinah, five in Dakhliyah, nine each in South Sharqiyah and Dhofar, two each in Musandam and Buraimi, and one each in North Sharqiyah and Dhahirah.

‘The new schools will accommodate about 80,000 male and female students, and will be built in consideration of the current number of students in each governorate and the number of evening schools in these, as well as the expected increase in the number of students at the end of the tenth Five-Year Plan in each governorate,’ MoE stated.
