The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has issued six licences to five companies to manage and operate docks for tourism and commercial purposes. Spread over four governorates, the licences aim to boost tourism and give a fillip to the economy.

In a statement, MTCIT said that it has granted licences for tourism purposes to Al Marsa Travel and Tourism Company in Dibba, Musandam for a berth of 250m length; Saraya Bandar al Jissah Company for Muscat Bay in Muscat, for a 105m berth; and two licences to Muriya Tourism Development Company for Jabal al Sifah in Muscat (864m berth) and Hawana Salalah in Dhofar (482m berth).

The ministry also granted two licences in Sur, South Sharqiyah to manage and operate docks for commercial purposes to Shorooq Marine Handling and Navigation Company for a 305m berth and Oman LNG for a 150m berth.

‘The initiative aims to support ports, maritime transport and the logistics sector, and enrich the tourism, commercial and industrial sectors in the sultanate.’

MTCIT has been collaborating with Oman International Container Terminal Company (Hutchison Ports Sohar) to develop, manage and operate Khasab Port in Musandam since October 1, 2022. The agreement between the two aims to develop, expand, operate and manage the port for a period of 30 years.

The ministry is also working to develop ports for raw materials and mining. It recently gave the initial approval to Oman Minerals Development Company to construct the Shuwaimiya Mining Port in Dhofar, while it is currently overseeing construction of a raw materials berth in Shinas Port.
