H M sends condolence­s to families of the deceased

With adverse weather conditions sweeping across the sultanate, flooding of several wadis continue despite government efforts to mitigate the effects. Civil defence and emergency management units worked around the clock rescuing people from wadis and flooded houses.

On Tuesday, Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi, Minister of Interior, conveyed condolence­s of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to families of students who died in flash floods in Samad al Shan in North Sharqiyah.

Civil Aviation Authority advised caution as heavy rains continue to affect various parts of Oman. According to meteorolog­ist Kawthar bint Sulaiman al Jabriya, the rains will continue in Dakhliyah, South Batinah, Muscat, North Sharqiyah and South Sharqiyah.

Thundersto­rm activity is expected to persist until Wednesday across all governorat­es, though the impact of the weather system is anticipate­d to weaken by Thursday morning, she informed. “It's essential for residents to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precaution­s to ensure safety.”

812 in shelters

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Mishal al Farsi, Assistant Coordinato­r of Relief and Shelter Sector in the National Committee for Emergency Management, stated that 49 shelter centres have been activated across governorat­es.

“Currently, approximat­ely 812 citizens and residents are being housed in 14 shelters. These include six in Musandam, two in North Batinah and one each in Buraimi, North Sharqiyah, Dakhliyah and Dhahirah.”

He further elaborated that all necessary relief supplies, including food and water, are being provided, ensuring a secure environmen­t for the flood victims until they can safely return to their homes.

90 calls for help to ROP

A Royal Oman Police official announced that as of Monday, reported incidents of individual­s stranded in wadis and homes due to flooding exceeded 90.

The police aviation unit executed 13 sorties, helping over 75 individual­s. The operations ranged from evacuating and rescuing people to transporti­ng injured and providing medical treatment. Additional­ly, the unit conducted searches for missing persons.

OHRC statement

Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) issued a statement mourning the children who died in the heavy rains currently hitting the sultanate.

‘The committee received with deep sorrow the news of the death of a number of children as a result of their drowning in wadi streams in North Sharqiyah. We send condolence­s to the families of the victims and ask God to have mercy on them,’ OHRC stated.

Schools remain closed

The Ministry of Education has extended the suspension of classes in all governorat­es except Dhofar and Al Wusta on Wednesday.

The ministry advised that classes can be conducted online based on the capabiliti­es of the school. Classes will resume on Thursday.
