Ro79mn pact inked for Phase 1 of Batinah Coastal Road project
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has embarked on a significant development project with the signing of a Ro79mn agreement on Wednesday for the first phase of the Batinah Coastal Road.
The project aims to enhance the transportation, logistics and infrastructure sectors, bolstering the national economy.
The agreement was inked by H E Said bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Muhammad Abdul Latif, General Manager of Consolidated Contractors Company Oman. The signing was witnessed by Bader bin Salim bin Marhoon al Mamari, SecretaryGeneral of Tender Board.
H E Mawali highlighted the project’s strategic importance, saying, "This road is crucial as it connects Khazaen Economic City with adjacent wilayats and the Port of Suwaiq."
He elaborated that Batinah Coastal Road will alleviate traffic congestion in the wilayats of Barka, Musannah and Suwaiq, and improve connectivity to Liwa and Shinas. "This development is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the local economy," the minister added.
Phase 1 of the project will see completion of 30km of unfinished segments, including 22km from Barka to Suwaiq Port and 8km from Sohar Port to Khatmat Malaha. Additionally, it will include construction of a flyover at Suwaiq Roundabout, four bridges and 67 culverts to ensure uninterrupted road use during rains, and service roads flanking the main road.
The agreement also includes a 4km dual carriageway from Barka Flyover to Barka Souq and a 6km link to Suwaiq.
The Batinah Coastal Road stretches from Barka to Khatmat Malaha in Shinas, covering a total distance of 244km. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase consisting of two segments - Al Naseem intersection in Barka to Suwaiq Port and from Sohar Port to Khatmat Malaha.
Phase II, spanning 111 km, will extend from Suwaiq Port to Sohar Port and commence following finalisation of compensation for those affected by the project, the minister informed.
