Be’ah collects over 31,000t of waste during Eid
Muscat - During the five-day Eid al Fitr holiday, Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) reported a 13% increase in waste collection, receiving over 31,000 tonnes of municipal and slaughter waste. This spike in waste generation compares to typical daily amounts.
Mohsen bin Mohammed al Barwani, Director General of Planning and Service Improvement at be'ah, highlighted the company's proactive approach in addressing this seasonal surge.
"In anticipation of the Eid period, we devised a comprehensive strategy in collaboration with operational teams across various governorates," he stated.
It involved the strategic placement of large containers for slaughter waste in populous areas to facilitate easier disposal, alongside an uptick in the frequency of waste collection services and enhanced on-ground supervision to ensure service quality throughout the holiday.
Slaughter activities significantly contributed to the increase in waste generation, with additional surges in other forms of municipal waste.
Barwani informed that Dhofar, North Batinah, and Buraimi witnessed the most substantial increases, accounting for over 93% of the total additional waste measured across the sultanate.
He also noted a shift in community behaviour in disposal of slaughter waste, attributing this change to targeted awareness campaigns conducted by be'ah. "Our concerted efforts to educate the community before and during Eid on proper disposal practices and environmental preservation have fostered a positive change," Barwani said.
These measures underscore be'ah’s commitment to environmental management and community education, particularly during periods of increased waste production.
