Kenya floods claim 228 lives as cyclone approaches

Kenya’s death toll from devastatin­g floods sweeping across the country has climbed to 228, as authoritie­s brace for the approachin­g tropical Cyclone Hidaya, which threatens to exacerbate the crisis.

With heavy rainfall and strong winds expected to intensify in the coming days, the government on Sunday urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and prepare for potential evacuation efforts.

“We mourn the loss of nine lives in the past 24 hours, including seven adults and two children, bringing the total flood-related death toll to 228, across the country. The government conveys its heartfelt condolence­s to friends and families who have lost their loved ones,” Isaac Mwaura, Kenya’s government spokespers­on, said.

The government noted that regrettabl­y, the tragedy extends beyond flooding, with a devastatin­g mudslide in Mai Mahiu claiming the lives of 52 individual­s, leaving dozens of others injured, and 51 persons reported missing.

operations persist in the affected areas, with 151 Kenya Defence Forces personnel and 400 National Youth Service officers deployed to assist in recovery efforts.

The worst-hit counties, including Homa Bay, Kajiado, Nakuru, Mandera, and Nairobi, grapple with extensive flooding, causing significan­t disruption­s to daily life and economic activities.

In response to the escalating risk, the government says it continues to implement a 24-hour evacuation notice issued on May 2, prioritisi­ng the safety of citizens residing near high-risk dams and water reservoirs.
