Agreement worth Ro125mn signed for Ghubrah 3 desalination plant
Nama Power and Water Procurement signed an agreement worth Ro125mn with a consortium of three local and international companies for the Ghubrah 3 desalination plant. Phase 3 of the project will see implementation of the largest desalination plant and one of the most prominent developments in the sultanate’s water sector.
The plant is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2027 and will represent a significant step towards enhancing Oman’s water security, its capacity accounting for approximately 20% of the contracted capacity in the main water network.
The plant will operate with the latest water desalination technologies - utilising reverse osmosis technology - contributing to enhancing electricity consumption efficiency and increasing desalinated water production capacity to meet current and future population growth requirements.
Spread over more than 70,000sqm, the Ro125mn plant will have production capacity of 300,000m3/day of desalinated water and a potable water tank of 45,000m3 capacity.
Capital Desalination Company - a consortium of GS Inima, a Spanish company engaged in water purification projects for over 50 years, Saudi-based Jemaih Energy and Water Company and Oman’s Sogex Company - will undertake construction of the plant.
Abdulaziz bin Saeed al Shithani, Chairman of Board of Directors of Nama Power and Water Procurement, and Marta Verde, Chairperson of Board of Directors of Capital Desalination Company, signed the agreement under the patronage of H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
On the occasion, Ahmed bin Salem bin Mohammed al Abri, Acting CEO of Nama Power and Water Procurement, stated that the agreement confirms the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for water and electricity, implementing new projects to achieve energy security, and providing potable water by expanding the production of energy and desalinated water economically.
