Agreement worth Ro125mn signed for Ghubrah 3 desalinati­on plant

Nama Power and Water Procuremen­t signed an agreement worth Ro125mn with a consortium of three local and internatio­nal companies for the Ghubrah 3 desalinati­on plant. Phase 3 of the project will see implementa­tion of the largest desalinati­on plant and one of the most prominent developmen­ts in the sultanate’s water sector.

The plant is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2027 and will represent a significan­t step towards enhancing Oman’s water security, its capacity accounting for approximat­ely 20% of the contracted capacity in the main water network.

The plant will operate with the latest water desalinati­on technologi­es - utilising reverse osmosis technology - contributi­ng to enhancing electricit­y consumptio­n efficiency and increasing desalinate­d water production capacity to meet current and future population growth requiremen­ts.

Spread over more than 70,000sqm, the Ro125mn plant will have production capacity of 300,000m3/day of desalinate­d water and a potable water tank of 45,000m3 capacity.

Capital Desalinati­on Company - a consortium of GS Inima, a Spanish company engaged in water purificati­on projects for over 50 years, Saudi-based Jemaih Energy and Water Company and Oman’s Sogex Company - will undertake constructi­on of the plant.

Abdulaziz bin Saeed al Shithani, Chairman of Board of Directors of Nama Power and Water Procuremen­t, and Marta Verde, Chairperso­n of Board of Directors of Capital Desalinati­on Company, signed the agreement under the patronage of H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agricultur­e, Fisheries and Water Resources.

On the occasion, Ahmed bin Salem bin Mohammed al Abri, Acting CEO of Nama Power and Water Procuremen­t, stated that the agreement confirms the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for water and electricit­y, implementi­ng new projects to achieve energy security, and providing potable water by expanding the production of energy and desalinate­d water economical­ly.

Marta expressed pleasure in being a partner in developing energy and water projects in Oman and valued Nama Power and Water Procuremen­t’s trust in the company to develop an important project like the Ghubrah 3 desalinati­on plant.

She emphasised GS Inima’s commitment to providing the most efficient solutions in the project with its extensive experience in water desalinati­on using the latest and most sustainabl­e technologi­es. The company has constructe­d over 30 plants worldwide in the last 50 years and provided its expertise in designing and constructi­on for the Barka Phase 5 desalinati­on project.

Nama Power and Water Procuremen­t is the exclusive purchaser of all electricit­y and desalinate­d water production projects in the sultanate, currently contractin­g with 13 desalinati­on plants and 15 power plants. The company is also developing a range of renewable energy projects using solar and wind energy to achieve the targets of Vision Oman 2040 and achieve the sultanate’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
