August 23: The Sultanate has a rich biodiversity, with each region having its own special features. Wadi al Maawil, for instance, is home to the Al Fans tree, which is estimated to be over 200 years old according to locals.

Al Fans is a perennial tree found only in Wadi al Maawil. According to official sources, there is “only one such tree in the entire country”.

Another document says “it is a solo tree in the Afi village in Wadi al Maawil. The tree was brought from Zanzibar in the 17th century and planted near Falaj al Washihi, where it can get fresh water”.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) describes it as “an evergreen tree with eggshaped leaves and 10 metres tall. Its edible fruits grow near the main trunk and main branches”.

According to the locals, the tree bears a “lovely fruit which can be ripped” and is available from the beginning of June.

Locals want the authorities to plant more such trees in the area. “There is only one tree left. Parts of the tree, particularly at the top, have gone dry. We request the officials to plant more such trees.”
