Fahd to attend GCC Summit today

Two-day meet to discuss regional, global issues; UK PM to join leaders

MUSCAT: On behalf of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmood al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, will lead the Sultanate’s delegation at the 37th GCC Leaders’ Summit to be held in Bahrain capital Manama on Tuesday and Wednesday.

HH Sayyid Fahd will be accompanie­d by Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah, Minister Responsibl­e for Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Hamad MORE ON PAGE 2 al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agricultur­e and Fisheries and officials.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, visiting the Gulf for the first time since she came to office in July, will attend the two-day summit. May will become the first British leader and the first woman to attend the annual gathering of the Gulf Cooperatio­n Council (GCC). In earlier remarks on Sunday, the British PM said that the UK must seek to “transform the way we do business” with the region.

Moreover, the GCC leaders, according to reports, are likely to discuss the whole range of regional and internatio­nal issues including terrorism, closer economic cooperatio­n and the situations in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Palestine. The Saudi proposal to transform the GCC into a “Gulf Union,” that calls for solidarity among the Gulf states, is likely to top the summit’s agenda.
