Revamp of higher education mooted

Members also called on the Minister of Higher Education to simplify education procedures for people with disabiliti­es, review experience­s of some countries especially in the majors that are relevant to certain types of disabiliti­es.

The minister, in her statement, admitted that there is an excess of graduates in all department­s and their employment will need special efforts from all stakeholde­rs.

It was also highlighte­d that many students who travel abroad for studies leave midway as they are unable to cope with the level of education.

A reduction in tuition fees at private higher education institutio­ns was suggested to make fees on par with other countries. The minister said the government has agreements with many countries for recognisin­g the certificat­es of higher education institutio­ns in the Sultanate.

It was pointed out that the labour market changes very quickly compared with the curricula of colleges and universiti­es. It was noted that the ministry plans to obtain labour market data from competent institutio­ns.

Suggestion­s included a strategy for admission to educationa­l institutio­ns and linked to labour market needs.

Members demanded an integrated annual report published by the ministry on the competenci­es of various colleges.
